What Is a Grow Tent?

Grow tents are essentially a fabric box coated with light and heat reflective material on the inside. One grow tent can accommodate a single or multiple grow beds. A complete kit comes with a ventilation system.

What Are Growing Tents Used For?

An indoor grow tent helps maintain complete control over your indoor growing operation in addition to grow lights, bed material, nutrients and ventilation.

The Benefits of a Grow Tent

  • Its reflective surface ensures your plants receive the total light output from your grow light.
  •  They increase plant canopy penetration by redirecting light sideways and upwards. Up to 30 percent more light reaches leaves below the canopy.
  • A grow tent helps maintain even temperature and humidity.
  • A grow bed ventilation system is more efficient because it works within a confined space instead of an entire room.
  • It facilitates heat, humidity and odor removal.

A Typical Grow Tent Setup

The best grow tents have a sturdy metal frame with strong corner connectors. The tent fabric is usually a single piece. After unfolding the fabric, it slides under the tent frame and then is raised over the sides and top. Additional rods support the lights, filter and fan. It may have one or more zippered openings on the sides for entry, viewing or ventilation. Quality grow tents have specialized openings for routing ductwork and electrical cables. This video shows a 5 x 10-foot grow tent being completely assembled and made ready for cultivating plants:

The Importance of Grow Tent Ventilation

Ventilation

Ventilation

All grow lights produce heat. The grow beds produce water vapor due to evaporation. If good ventilation is not provided, then the moisture and heat create an ideal environment in which fungi thrive. Fungi growing on your plants reduces your yield and could permanently damage the crop.

Thus, it is critical that even the best grow tent has an adequate ventilation system. A grow tent ventilation system provides fresh air and exhausts stale, hot air. Air flow is provided by the exhaust system but can be augmented with fans that create even flow across the grow tent. An effective ventilation systems eliminates excess moisture, regulates temperature and eliminates odors. An adequate ventilation system completely changes the air inside the tent 20 times per hour or more.

Comparing Mylar versus Other Grow Tent Types

Mylar grow tent

Mylar grow tent

Many cheap materials can be used to reflect light. Flat white paint has 75 percent light reflectivity. Up to 90 percent reflectivity is supplied by elastomer rubber roofing paint. Other inexpensive choices include unpainted Styrofoam and "panda poly," which is a polyethylene sheet that is black on one side and white on the other. It supplies 75 to 90 percent reflectivity.

All these pale in comparison to various forms of Mylar. Mylar is a reflective polyester film, which comes in 1 or 2 mm thicknesses. It reflects between 92 and 100 percent of the light inside a grow room. It also reflects up to 85 percent of the heat as well.

Mylar comes in different types. Foylon is a more durable variety made of polyester fabric and reinforced with a foil laminate. Like Mylar, it is highly reflective of light and heat. Additionally, it resists creases and tears, both of which can create hotspots. Another version of Mylar, called C3 anti-detection film, has the added feature of being nearly invisible to IR-scanners.

Gorilla 4x8 Grow Tent

Gorilla 4x8 Grow Tent

Overview:

The GGT 48 is a popular size among marijuana growers as it can be used to create a large single harvest or be divided into veg and flower rooms for continuous production. Like all Gorilla's original grow tent line, the GGT 48 is built to last a lifetime with super-thick 1680D canvas and bonded, diamond-textured inner Mylar that reflects every photon from any grow light. There are no plastic components in this grow tent. The frame is all-steel, perfectly rigid and able to support any and all auxiliary lighting and ventilation equipment. Place an AdvancedLEDLights DS XML 350 on each side and you can grow anything.

All Gorilla grow tents come with oversized, double-cinch ducting ports placed in sensible locations to support common hydroponic or soil-based grow systems. If you want to increase, even double, your harvest, add an optional height extension kit to raise your GGT 48 up to a 10-foot height. Three doors make this tent accessible from all sides.

  • Conclusion

It is astounding that they supply eight 10-inch duct ports. Those will accommodate any configuration imaginable and make splitting this tent into separate grow rooms a snap. Likewise, five electrical ports is more than enough. As with most Gorilla products, the 5-star grow tent reviews pour in based on how sturdy, durable and flexible this grow tent is. Even though it costs up to 4 times more than cheaper grow tents, everyone agrees the price is worth it. The one consistent complaint is that Gorilla does not use discreet packaging, though it is likely they would accommodate a special request in that regard.

  • Conclusion

If you want to start small but do not want to skimp on quality, buy this fine, compact grow tent from Gorilla. Although the LITE LINE uses lighter canvas than their original line, it is hard to find fault with it. It is perfect for one or two large pots and the frame can support a small ventilation system and an inexpensive Promotion TaoTronics® 80*3W 6 Bands grow light. One GGT LITE 24 grow tent reviewer says that this is the fourth grow tent he has tried and the first with which he is completely satisfied. One buyer would have liked a 10-inch port at the bottom of the tent.

Indoor Grow Tent FAQ

What are the three most important features in a grow tent?

When looking for grow tents for sale, the three most common points of failure are the frame, the Mylar and the zippers. If the frame uses thin metal or plastic components, it is prone to failure. If the Mylar is not bonded to the canvas, it tends to tear. Poor quality zippers stick and let out light.

How important is the tent height?

If you are planning for a LED grow tent, then height is less important as LED grow lights put out little heat downward. If you are a marijuana grower, you can compensate for a low height by cultivating dwarf plant varieties. Height is most important with large grow tents because you will walk inside them.

What about the shell thickness?

Canvas that is too thin will not support the Mylar lining as well as high-density canvas such as 600D or higher. It also tends to have more light leaks and pass odors. Grow tents with canvas density of 600D or lower also tend to have cheaper, non-lightproof zippers. Otherwise, any shell thickness is adequate for maintaining temperature and humidity.

What is the best grow light to use in my grow tent?

This is one of those questions that can only be answered with “it depends.” Once you find a grow light which has coverage at least equal to the footprint of your grow tent, then the next big issue is heat. HID lights, either HPS or MH, must have heat vented to the outside. Their ballasts should be located outside too. It is possible with LED grow lights that no extra heat ventilation is required. After considering heat, choose a grow light or combination of lights that provide adequate light spectrum, although this has nothing to do with the grow tent itself.

Which type of ventilation fans are best?

For small tents, under 12 sq. ft., axial fans such as PC fans can be used even without ducting by placing them directly in the port sock. A good all-around fan type is the centrifugal vortex fans with more strength to pull air through ducts. They should be placed outside the tent. A mix flow fan is the strongest of the three types, so it should be used on larger tents. It is also the quietest fan.

How big should my ventilation fan be?

Your fan should change the air inside the tent 20 times per hour or every 3 minutes. Calculate the total volume of your grow tent in cubic feet and divide it by 3 to obtain the CFM fan rating you need. For a 4 x 4 x 7-foot grow tent that would be 4 x 4 x 7 / 3 = 37.33 CFM. So a 40 CFM fan or larger would work well. Double that base number if you are using an air filter and double again if you are also venting heat.

Should I use an intake fan?

There is absolutely no need to waste power on an intake fan. Simply open one or more ventilation vents at the bottom of the tent to provide air flow into the tent.

How bad is the odor problem?

The odor problem is very significant especially with a cheap grow tent that has a low-density fabric. That is why using a carbon filtration system is highly recommended.

Making Your Decision

Hopefully, this grow tent guide has provided you with all the information required to make a good buying decision for your first or next indoor grow tent. You now understand the benefits of a good grow tent, such as reduction in odor and, most importantly, the maintenance of a perfect environment for producing the highest foliage and flower yield.

You now realize there is quite a variance in construction techniques, material quality, layout and porting options between manufacturers. There is a lot to compare among cheaper brands, but if you simply want the best grow tent you can buy, then Gorilla is the brand to consider most closely.

The next step is determining how large of a grow operation you want to try in order to select the correct tent size. If you are unsure of your dedication to indoor growing, then minimize your investment until you have tried it on for size. If it turns out to suit you, then you can buy a bigger tent and use the small tent for starting seedlings or clones.

If you are sure you are going to love indoor growing, another budget-wise option would be to purchase a 4 x 8-foot model. Place a divider in the middle and learn the ropes of indoor cultivation in a 4 x 4-foot space. When the first crop is done, you have the option to instantly double your operation by removing the divider and adding another grow light.

Whatever path you take to indoor plant cultivation, a grow tent is essential to obtaining the best yield. Considering that the remaining equipment represents the bulk of your investment and learning curve, a good grow tent adds only a little bit more complexity but hugely improves your chances for good results.
